Hambrook Marshes

Where is Hambrook Marshes?
Hambrook Marshes is a 50 acre wetland area with the River Stour running though it and is situated close to Canterbury City Centre. The site was acquired by Love Hambrook Marshes in 2014 with Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership coming in to warden the land in 2024. The site can be accessed on foot via the Great Stour Way, Wincheap Industrial Estate, and Whitehall road. The site is accessible for wheelchairs, bikes, and prams via the Great Stour Way which is a riverside flat path.
Our work at Hambrook Marshes

Hambrook Marshes is Canterbury’s largest green space and is wardened by KSCP Partnership Officer Andrew Craswell, who provides vital habitat restoration and maintenance to the site year-round with a regular team of local volunteers. This includes conservational activities such as; fencing, habitat creation, mowing, litter picks, guided walks, and coppicing.

Education at Hambrook Marshes

KSCP Partnership Officer Lucy Mangnall-Green runs education sessions on the Marshes to engage young people in the protection and conservational importance of this vital green space as well as promote nature connection in young children and teenagers. Each session will aim to promote nature connection in young children and teenagers and foster a deep care and understanding for green spaces and conservation through a range of fun and engaging activities. Keep your eyes peeled as we also have a new Forest School program on the marshes in the works too! With the river Stour flowing though Hambrook and a wealth of wildlife calling the marshes its home it really is a great place to explore and learn all about this vital space. The Marshes is open all year round for educational visits (although wellies are a must in the wetter months!) and can be accessed via the Great Stour way. All session are led by our Partnership Officer Lucy and can be adapted to all ages, SEND and SEMH needs, and learning goals. Hambrook Marshes has a rich and exciting history, from roman invasions to war time train tracks, there is so much to learn.
