Wetland peat East Kent

Peat occurs in wetland areas and is an important carbon sink as well as valuable habitat for wildlife. There are small areas of lowland peat in East Kent which are deteriorating due to historic draining and the impacts of climate change.

KSCP have recently worked with the River Stour Internal Drainage Board to create some resilience in the lowland peat fenland near Betteshanger after Government funding was obtained through the Lowland agricultural peat small infrastructure pilot (LAPSIP) .

Work has been undertaken to increase summer water levels through the addition of stop board sluices and large woody dams. Volunteers assisted in creation of some smaller woody dams on a side stream.
