“Leaky Dam” installations
Natural Flood Management entails trying to slow water in the landscape, creating new habitat for biodiversity, helping store water to keep the rivers flowing in the summer and reducing flooding.
Yesterday – a wonderful group of people, volunteering from Balfour Beatty, helped install a series of leaky woody dams, on a stream next to a sheep field. These dams still allow a stream base flow, important for wildlife. They will slow the flow of highwater levels, pushing water into newly created stream side bays, and hopefully reduce the impact of heavy storms on local residents’ homes.
